Description
This bird painting was painted in oils and has a soft greenish/blue background.
The American kestrel is the smallest and most common falcon in North America. Its plumage is colorful, and their young are similar in to adults. It is 9-12 inches long and has a wingspan of 21 inches. It has a short beak, white cheeks, long tail and long, pointed wings. The male has gray wings and a spotted breast and tummy. The female has brownish rusty wings and streaks on her breast. The kestrel is also known as the sparrow hawk.
This falcon can be found in in open areas for hunting and tall places for it to perch. The American kestrel is the only falcon or hawk that nests in cavities. It makes its nest in tree hollows, under eaves, in woodpecker holes and in nesting boxes.
The kestrel scans the ground for prey, though it also hunts from the air. It can hover in the air with very quick wing beats while homing in on prey. Its diet usually consists of grasshoppers and insects, lizards, mice, and small birds.
