Description
Oil painting of a Black Witch Moth.
The erebid moth Ascalapha odorata, known as the black witch, is a large bat-shaped, nocturnal moth, ranging from the southern United States to Brazil. These moths are also migratory into Canada and most of United States. It is the largest insect in the United States with a wingspan of up to 7 inches. The long forewings and nocturnal habits make the Black Witch resemble a bat.
Some people consider these moths to be bearers of good fortune and believe that seeing one will bring financial well-being and luck. Black moths can symbolize inner peace and strength and also a sign of rebirth.
