Description
An oil painting of a Red Angus cow with horns. Red Angus Cattle are a breed of beef cattle and have many of the characteristics of the Black Angus. They are very hardy, grow quickly and are popular for their marbled meat which is similar to the Black Angus.
They originated in Europe and were introduced to England by the Vikings in the eight century. They brought with them reddish brown hornless cattle which interbred with black native Celtic cattle of Scotland, which had upright horns. A naturally polled black breed was produced, similar to the black Aberdeen Angus of today.
In the eighteenth century black Scottish cattle were too light to provide large draught oxen, so larger English longhorns, mainly red in color, were brought in and crossed with the black polled breed. The offspring were all black polled animals, as black is a dominant color, and red a recessive one. Although they all carried the red gene. Interbreeding produced an average of one red calf in four, in accordance with Mendel's law of heredity.
In 1945, some cattlemen started selecting and breeding reds from the best black Aberdeen Angus herds in America.
In 1954 several breeders chose to use Red Angus to establish the industrys first performance registry.
The Red Angus Association of America The RAAA has long been recognized for its farsighted vision of beef production. The red colored hair and thicker skin make the Red Angus more adaptable to hotter climates than the Black Angus. Red Angus are popular in the northern areas of North America (from central and northern USA up to Canada) because of their ability to withstand cold temperatures.
