Description
An oil painting study of two gondoliers in Venice, waiting for their next ride.
Today there are around 400 licensed gondoliers. When one dies, the license passes to his widow.
Gondoliers must wear black pants and a striped shirt. They usually wear a special hat. Gondoliers stand up to row and use one oar as it is the easiest way to row through the narrow canals of Venice. Black is the official color of gondolas and many are highly decorated with comfortable seats. 200 years ago there were about 10,000 gondolas, but today only about 500.
