The Merino sheep is prized for its wool. It is believed they may have originated in North Africa, but its wool was already highly valued in the middle ages. Merino wool is the softest and finest of any sheep. Merino rams have long spiral horns growing close to the head. Their wool is suitable for blending with silk, possum and cashmere.
The Merino is very resilient and versatile, adapting to Australias harsh climate conditions. In Australia there are 4 basic strains of Merino sheep: Peppin Merino, South Australian Merino, Saxon Merino and Spanish Merino.
