An oil painting of a Red Angus cow with horns. Red Angus Cattle are a breed of beef cattle and have many of the characteristics of the Black Angus. They are very hardy, grow quickly and are popular for their marbled meat which is similar to the Black Angus.
They originated in Europe and were introduced to England by the Vikings in the eight century. They brought with them reddish brown hornless cattle which interbred with black native Celtic cattle of Scotland, which had upright horns. A naturally polled black breed was produced, similar to the black Aberdeen Angus of today.
In the eighteenth century black Scottish cattle were too light to provide large draught oxen, so larger English longhorns, mainly red in color, were brought in and crossed with the black polled breed. The offspring were all black polled animals, as black is a dominant color, and red a recessive one. Although they all carried the red gene.
